Resumo: This study aimed to analyze the intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate, vascular microdensity (MDV), and VEGF expression in the epithelium of 21 cases of inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia (HFI), 46 cases of oral epithelial dysplasia (ED) and 21 cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSC). Immunohistochemistry was performed using an anti-VEGF antibody, and anti- CD-105 to access the MDV. The number of inflammatory cells was assessed in the underlying connective tissue. No statistical differences were found in the expression of markers between groups. However, it was observed that the MDV and the inflammatory infiltrate increased as the malignancy of the lesion increased. Severe and high-risk ED had higher rates of MDV and inflammation. Comparing MDV with VEGF expression, it was found that MVD increased with increasing VEGF expression. It is concluded that the increase in MDV, VEGF, and the presence of inflammatory infiltrate can be associated with the malignant progression of the epithelium, however, studies with a larger number of cases are needed to confirm this data.
