Título: INTRAORAL STENT FOR TONGUE CANCER RADIOTHERAPY AND THE IMPACT ON SIDE EFFECTS

Nome do Apresentador: Renan Lemos da SILVA

Categoria do Trabalho: Painel de pesquisa científica (PPC)

Área Temática: Oncologia

Resumo: Objective: To evaluate the clinical side effects of a customized intraoral stent (IOS) in
tongue cancer patients undergoing intensity-modulated radiotherapy and the impact of
oral health on quality of life (QoL).
Study design: Oral mucositis was assessed using the World Health Organization and
the oral mucositis assessment scales; dysgeusia was assessed using a yes/no
question; trismus was evaluated with the aid of a universal caliper, while the impact of
oral health on QoL was calculated using Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire
(OHIP-14). The patient evaluated the comfort of the IOS.
Results: The sample consisted of 05 men and 03 women with a mean age of 46 (±15)
years. All patients had mouth ulcers in at least two sites, but 75% maintained solid food
intake. Only one patient reported no change in the taste of food, and the variation in
mouth opening before and after treatment was, on average, -22%. There was a
significant variation in OHIP-14 regarding functional limitation (p=0.0016). The IOS was
stable and did not cause discomfort in 100% and 75% of the sample, respectively.
Conclusions: The use of IOS with the patient´s comprehensive treatment seems to
contribute to alleviate the side effects of radiotherapy for tongue cancer.
