Resumo: Objective: To evaluate the clinical side effects of a customized intraoral stent (IOS) intongue cancer patients undergoing intensity-modulated radiotherapy and the impact oforal health on quality of life (QoL).Study design: Oral mucositis was assessed using the World Health Organization andthe oral mucositis assessment scales; dysgeusia was assessed using a yes/noquestion; trismus was evaluated with the aid of a universal caliper, while the impact oforal health on QoL was calculated using Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire(OHIP-14). The patient evaluated the comfort of the IOS.Results: The sample consisted of 05 men and 03 women with a mean age of 46 (±15)years. All patients had mouth ulcers in at least two sites, but 75% maintained solid foodintake. Only one patient reported no change in the taste of food, and the variation inmouth opening before and after treatment was, on average, -22%. There was asignificant variation in OHIP-14 regarding functional limitation (p=0.0016). The IOS wasstable and did not cause discomfort in 100% and 75% of the sample, respectively. Conclusions: The use of IOS with the patient´s comprehensive treatment seems tocontribute to alleviate the side effects of radiotherapy for tongue cancer.
