Resumo: The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a molecular technique used to amplify and detect the DNA or RNA of a pathogen in a biological sample. PCR has been widely used for the diagnosis of viral, bacterial and fungal diseases, including COVID-19, HIV, hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis, among others. The appearance of lesions in the oral cavity during the hospitalization of patients is common. PCR is useful for diagnosis and effective and safe treatment for the patient. We analyzed 189 medical records of patients admitted to the ICU and found 18 cases (9.5%) with oral lesions suggestive of viral etiology. In 11 patients, a reverse transcription PCR viral panel of the lesion was performed. Based on it's results, we found that 72.7% were positive for herpesviruses. PCR is an important technique to aid in the diagnosis and treatment in hospitalized patients.
