Resumo: Objective: This review aimed to investigate the potential role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in salivary gland carcinomas (SGCs), focusing on their diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic applications. Study design: A narrative review of the literature was done by searching databases PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and LILACS. Results: In this review, numerous miRNAs have been found to be dysregulated in SGCs. Among these miRNAs, miR-21, miR-455-3p, and miR-140 were found to be particularly promising as diagnostic biomarkers. Meanwhile, overexpression of miR-17, miR-20a, miR-21, miR-181a-2, miR-152, and miR-331-3p was associated with poor overall survival (OS) in adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) patients, while increased expression levels of miR-205-5p and miR-224-5p and decreased expression levels of miR-139-3p, miR-145-3p, miR-148a-3p, miR-186-5p, miR-338-3p, miR-363-3p, and miR-4324 were significantly related to worse OS in mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) patients. Furthermore, several miRNAs were found to have oncogenic or tumor suppressor roles in ACC and MEC. Conclusion: Here, we reviewed the expression of microRNA in specific histological types of SGCs available in the literature, such as ACC and MEC. In conclusion, miRNAs have the potential to be useful diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers, and their inhibition or transfection may be a novel therapeutic target for these tumors.
