Título: RADIATION-INDUCED CHANGES IN ORAL MUCOSA TISSUES- REPORT OF SEVEN CASES

Resumo: High doses of radiation therapy (RT) may cause adverse reactions in the adjacent tissues. Oral mucosa alterations after RT are poorly described and require special attention to avoid overdiagnosis. Here we reported seven cases demonstrating morphological changes in the oral mucosa after RT. Six patients had oral squamous cell carcinoma and one patient with humerus fibromyxosarcoma. All patients were irradiated in the head and neck region. The cases showed mild epithelial changes in association with focal cellular atypia in fibroblasts and endothelial cells. Fibrosis was observed in the stroma, accompanied by a chronic inflammatory infiltrate. During follow-up, three patients are free of the disease, one died of metastatic disease, and three are lost from the follow-up. In conclusion, stromal cells atypia and fibrosis were the main findings observed in these cases. Clinical history are morphological findings important to confirm the absence of malignant cells.
