Resumo: Objective: To conduct an overview on the efficacy of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) in the prevention and management of oral mucositis (OM). Study Design: An overview of SRs was conducted based on PRISMA guidelines. Searches were performed in five electronic databases. The methodology quality of the individual included SRs was assessed by the Measurement Tool to Assess the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews. Results: Of the 1209 articles gathered in a first analysis, 14 were finally included in this overview. The included studies presented a wide variation in PBMT protocols and outcomes. Thirteen SRs concluded positive effects on the use of prophylactic or therapeutic PBMT for OM, considering both adult and pediatric population. One SR concluded no improvement in the treatment of OM with the use of PBMT, and another one showed little evidence to conclude the effectiveness of this therapy only for pediatric population. Conclusion: The qualitative analysis of the data from the included SRs in this overview demonstrated positive results regarding the effectiveness of PBMT for OM in adult population. In the pediatric population, the studies do not seem to support a clear conclusion.
