Resumo: Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the strategies for screening and early detection of oral cancer in the last 10 vears. Study Design: A bibliographic search was done with the MEDLINE/PubMed database. The inclusion criteria were observational studies in humans involving strategies for screening and early detection of oral cancer in English, from January 2012 to December 2022. The analysis of the results was narrative. Results: Various screening models were employed in the studies, such as population screening, with home visits and invitations to participate in screening events; opportunistic screening performed during dental consultations; medical screening, performed in general health consultations; workplace screening, self-screening with mouth self-exam or high-risk screening in patients with risk factors for oral cancer. Several adjunctive techniques are available to potentially aid in the early diagnosis of oral cancer, including visual examination, oral biopsy, oral exfoliative cytology, saliva samples, fluorescent instruments, narrowband imaging, and toluidine blue stain. Conclusion: The findings of this review indicate the existence of a variety of oral cancer screening programs and methods for early diagnosis. These strategies should be considered in order to increase the early detection rates of oral cancers.
