Título: IMMUNOEXPRESSION OF ING3 IN ACTINIC CHEILITIS AND LOWER LIP SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Resumo: Objective: To analyze the immunohistochemical expression of the ING3 protein in 45 cases of actinic cheilitis (AC) and 48 cases of lower lip squamous cell carcinoma (LLSCC). Additionally, it was investigated associations with clinical and pathological parameters of the studied lesions. Study Design: The protein expression was analyzed and compared between the two groups. Exact Fisher's, Kruskal-Wallis', and Mann-Whitney's tests, as well as Spearman correlation test, were performed. Results: AC cases showed significant differences in ING3 expression (nuclear-cytoplasmic and cytoplasmic-only) when graded according to the binary system proposed by Kujan et al. (2006) (p = 0.028; p = 0.016, respectively). In LLSCCs, no significant differences were observed between ING3 cellular expressions and clinical and pathological parameters (p > 0.05). Nuclear-cytoplasmic expression was significantly less observed in LLSCCs when compared to AC cases (p = 0.001), and cytoplasmic-only expression was significantly higher in LLSCCs (p = 0.001). Conclusion: These results suggest a notable decrease in nuclear expression of ING3 in malignant transformation, indicating defective tumor suppression role of this protein in ACs and LLSCCs. Nevertheless, it is believed that, in lip carcinogenesis, ING3 is better characterized as a predictor biomarker of malignant transformation than a biological tumor behavior one.
