Resumo:
Oral potentially malignant disorders are conditions that have a higher risk of developing oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) when compared to normal mucosa. Among them is leukoplakia, which has a malignant transformation rate of about 4%. In addition, these lesions may histopathologically present varying degrees of oral epithelial dysplasia (OED) and also hyperplasia without atypia. We report five cases with a clinical diagnosis of leukoplakia, all of which underwent toluidine blue (TBS) staining for selection of the biopsy area. A histopathological analysis was carried out and its correlation with the result of the TBS, where there was a predominance of cases positive for TBS and that presented OED or even OSCC. TBS has been used in dentistry for decades and studies have shown that it is a non-toxic, fast, low-cost and efficient tool, helping in the diagnostic process, in the selection of the biopsy area of lesions suspected of malignancy..
