Resumo: Objective: Cannabinoids are substances that act on the endocannabinoid system present in the body, including the mouth and various physiological mechanisms of the immune system. There is a need to understand the effect of using cannabinoids extracted from Cannabis sativa as a therapeutic option.
Study design:A crossover randomized clinical trial is being carried out to test the comparative effect of using cannabinoids with or without photobiomodulation to control radio-induced oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer (CAAE 66171122.5.0000.031). The outcomes to be evaluated are the degree of severity of oral mucositis, pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines, oral symptoms, adherence to treatment and quality of life.
Expected results: Scientific evidence indicates that cannabinoids can act in the control of symptomatic and postoperative lesions, as they have action on vanilloid receptors. It stimulates the production of saliva, and in lesions of an inflammatory nature such as oral mucositis, traumatic ulcers and periodontitis, it modulates the inflammatory response. In addition, they may be useful in controlling the anxiety of patients undergoing cancer treatment.
Conclusion:It is believed that, with the results to be achieved by the use of cannabinoids, they may constitute another therapeutic option for the control of oral mucositis, anxiety and hyposalivation.
