Título: Pan American notable people with head and neck cancer: An international survey

Resumo: Objective: To identify Pan-American notable people with head and neck cancer (HNC) and to know the professional perspective regarding the influence of the stories of notable patients in the prevention. Methods: A RedCap questionnaire was conducted on oral medicinists, oral pathologists, head and neck surgeons, and clinical oncologists with experience in HNC research, treatment, or teaching in Latin America and Caribbean countries. Also, we performed structured searches in PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, LILACS and gray literature (Google Scholar, ProQuest, and Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertação). Results: We identified thirty-nine notable patients from the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Chile, Peru, and El Salvador, being actors and athletes the most reported. All the participants agreed that the stories of notable patients with HNC can positively impact on the lay population and promote prevention through the Internet followed by social media and television. Conclusion: In the Pan-American region, notable people from different fields that suffered from HNC may be optimal agents for increase cancer awareness and promote prevention strategies.
