Resumo: Objective. To assess the efficacy of acupuncture for controlling mouth and eye dryness in patients with primary Sjögren's Syndrome (pSS). Study design. This was a single-center, double-blind, controlled clinical study in which pSS patients were prospectively randomized in two groups to receive acupuncture or placebo, weekly, for 2 months. Unstimulated Whole Salivary Flow (UWSF), Schirmer Test (ST), Corneal Fluorescein Staining Score (CFS), Tear Film Break-up Time (TFBUT), Eular Sjögren´s Syndrome Patient Reported Index (ESSPRI), Xerostomia Inventory (XI), Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) were assessed at baseline, immediately and one month after last session. Results. Forty-six patients completed the study. ESSPRI (dryness domain) decreased (p=0.0009) and ST increased (p=0.04) significantly in the acupuncture group. No other differences were noted, although there was some evidence of improvement of UWSF, OSDI, CFS and TFBUT after acupuncture. Conclusion. Acupuncture can be effective in relieving pSS dryness.
