Resumo: Objective: To assess the impact of two protocols of photobiomodulation (PBM) on the oral carcinogenesis process induced by 4NQO. Study Design: Sixty-six male Wistar rats were received systemic 4NQO for 12 and 20 weeks. The animals were divided in control group, PBM 10J/cm² group, and PBM 33.3J/cm² group. PBM were applied three times each week, and it was carried out with an InGaAlP diode laser operating in continuous mode and in contact while employing the punctual technique. At weeks 12 and 20, the animals were euthanized, and each tongue was morphologic analyzed. Results: The PBM 33.3J/cm² group had higher scores since it was the only group with nodular lesions (p=0.005). The majority of animals in both the control (n=7) and PBM10 J/cm² (n=10) groups had clinically erosive lesions. The nodular form was more common in animals euthanized after 20 weeks. No morphological significant difference was observed among the groups of 12 and 20 weeks. At 12 and 20 weeks, the most common histological diagnosis in all groups was epithelial dysplasia and squamous cell carcinoma, respectively. Conclusion: PBM exposure on a neoplastic mucosa neither promotes tumor growth nor inhibits the neoplastic process.
