Resumo: This prospective, longitudinal study included a cohort of adult patients hospitalized in intensive care units (ICU). It evaluated the correlation between oral health and oral, and systemic complications. Oral and systemic health conditions at admission were collected. Outcomes were oral complications, ventilator-associated pneumonia; sepsis; duration of mechanical ventilation (IMV); time of antimicrobials use; respiratory infection-free time; days of ICU and death. Correlations analysis was performed using multivariate linear and binary logistic regression adjusted for variables with significance in the exploratory analysis. 354 patients were included, 212 male, 54.5 (18-90) years, 40% presented oral pathology in admission (25% gingivitis and 17% residual root), 4% developed pneumonia and 24% died. IMV (odds:3.82, p:0.01), gingivitis (odds:2.38,p:0.01), and gingivitis plus residual root (odds: 5.17, p:0,003) were independent risk factors for oral complication. Edentulous patients used less days of antibiotic (coeF: -0,09, p:0,01) and longer time free of respiratory infection (coef: 0,09, p:0,037). Death risk was correlated with older patients (odds:1,04; IC: 1,02-1,06), SAPS index (odds: 1,02, IC: 1,005-1,047) and immunosuppressors use (odds: 2,11: IC: 1,10-4,05). In conclusion patients with gingivitis, gingivitis plus residual root was more likely to develop oral complications while edentulous one showed less respiratory infection.
