Resumo: Objective: To evaluate hospital admissions for oral and pharyngeal cancer in Brazil from 2008 to 2017. Study Design: analysis of hospitalizations in the Hospital Information System available at DATASUS between 2008 and 2017. Results: There were 263.556 hospitalizations for oral and pharyngeal cancer. The Southeast had the highest frequency of cases (44.3%). The highest hospitalization rate occurred in the South (19.6/100.000). The highest mortality rates found were in the North (12.7%) and Southeast (12.3%). There was a predominance of hospitalizations under the private system (53.5%) and on an emergency in Brazil (53.5%). The hospital stay mean was 6.4 days. The fatality rate on an urgent basis was higher than on an elective. The analysis of average human development index and hospitalization rate showed a moderate positive correlation between these variables and the regions of the country. There was a higher average cost in reais per hospital stay on an elective basis. Conclusion: There is a high number of hospitalizations for these types of cancer in Brazil, in addition to a high cost and high average hospital stay, varying between regions of the country.
