Resumo: Oral cancer (OC) is a multifactorial disease that mainly affects men over 60 years of age. Early diagnosis and rapid initiation of treatment increases the chance of cure and reduces morbidity related to cancer treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the time elapsed from the diagnosis of OC in a secondary care service to referral for treatment in tertiary care, between the years 2017 and 2022. Ten patients diagnosed with OC were included, whose data could be evaluated and who were referred for treatment at the reference oncological hospital. Most were male (60%) with a mean age of 63 years. The mean time between initial diagnosis and surgical treatment was 168.8 days. The highest interval was between first oncology specialist consultation and surgical treatment. Six patients received adjuvant radiotherapy and one also underwent chemotherapy. The interval until surgery might be influenced by number of hospital beds, paradoxically, more advanced cases tend to require longer hospital stays, occupying beds for a longer period. Further studies must identify the impact of this interval in patients´ prognosis. Besides early diagnosis, rapid initiation of treatment is also determinant for better outcome and prognosis and better strategies must be implemented.
