Resumo: Objective: to evaluate the demographic characteristics of the minor salivary gland biopsies performed for Sjögren´s syndrome (SS) diagnosis. Study design: All minor salivary gland biopsies performed for SS diagnosis from 2006 to 2022 were selected. Gender and age of patients and final diagnosis were compared. Results: final sample was composed by 339 biopsies performed in 316 females (93,2%) and 23 males (6,8%) with a mean age of 52,6 years. There were no differences on the mean age of females (52,6 years) and males (52,7 years) (p=0,969). Final diagnosis included 95 SS (28%), 172 unspecific sialadenitis (50,8%) and 72 normal salivary glands (21,2%). SS patients (49,7 years) were younger than sialadenitis (54 years) and normal glands (53 years) patients (p=0,066). There was no statistical significant difference on gender distribution by final diagnosis (p=0,977). SS diagnosis ranged from 22% to 37,5% of the diagnosis in 11 out of 17 years. Conclusion: SS diagnosis represented 28% of the diagnosis rendered, and most cases were represented by females in their fifties. The demographic profile of the patients and the frequency of SS diagnosis were similar along the years in the present sample. Support: FAPERJ and CNPq, Brazil.
