Resumo: The assessment of oral mucositis (OM) is essential in the prevention and treatment strategies, however, the scale classification of lesions in children is not as consolidated as in adults. The lack of valid pediatric instruments for evaluating OM can provide unreliable data. Objective: The aim of the study was to discuss how oral mucositis and its adverse effects have been evaluated and classified in oncologic pediatric patients. Study Design: The search of this systematic review was performed in MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Scopus. Results: A total of 103 articles were included. The WHO OM scale was the most used, described in 64% studies, followed by Oral Assessment Guide (OAG) in 17.4% studies and Children´s International Mucositis Evaluation Scale (ChIMES) in 8.7% studies. Alltogheter, 322 children were evaluated in the studies, about 50.6% were boys and 36.2%, girls. The mean age was 9.5 years. Within the total of 103 studies, 48% had hematological malignancies (HM) and solid tumors (ST) and 37.8% only HM. Conclusion: The WHO scale is the most used. The lack of validated instruments for the assessment of OM in pediatric patients leads to the improper use of scales that are made for adults.
