Resumo: During the next 20 years it is expected that most head and neck carcinomas will be HPV positive and that the incidence of oropharyngeal carcinoma will increase, being HPV16 the most associated high-risk genotype. Objective: To analyze HPV and its genotypes in patients with oral carcinoma and in population without oral lesions. Patients and method: retrospective case-control study. Study group (SG): 72 patients with oral carcinomas and Control group (CG) 72 healthy volunteers matched by sex and age to the SG. HPV detection by PCR and genotype, sex and age range. Results: SG 42% (30) HPV positive and CG 4% (3) (OR 16.43 (CI: 5.10-5.94) p>0.0001). Genotypes SG 40% high risk, half of them HPV16. Positive CG all low-risk HPV11. Age range SG between 40 to 70 years, in GC 20 to 50 years, being equal number men and women in both. Conclusions: Probably in the younger healthy population the virus is in a transient form, while in the SG the persistence of the virus, mainly high risk, in association with other factors is a situation conducive to carcinogenesis. However, this is an issue that requires further study and analysis. Study financially supported by SECyT, Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Argentina.
