Resumo: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the main risk factor for oropharyngeal cancer and its relationship with oral cancer has been studied, with inconclusive results. Objective: To analyze HPV and other risk factors, in patients with oral carcinomas and with non-neoplastic lesions. Patients and method: Retrospective clinical study (Ethics Committee Faculty of Dentistry UNC 06). Study group (SG): 72 patients with oral carcinoma and Control group (CG): 41 patients with non-neoplastic lesions. HPV was detected by PCR. Age, sex, tobacco, alcohol and chronic mechanical irritation (BMI) were analyzed. X2 test was applied. Results: SG average age 64, 58% men; CG 57 and 56% women. SG 42% (30) HPV positive and 34% (14) of the CG, OR 1.38 CI (0.63-3.03) p=0.43. HPV-positive SG presented 13% of HPV single factor, and association with tobacco and alcohol 40%. The BMI in 21% of the SG and in 67% in positives of this group. In CG the virus was always associated with other factors, most frequently with BMI in 93% of positives, followed by tobacco 32% and alcohol 29%. Conclusions: We cannot affirm the independent action of the virus, but we can affirm its important association with other factors, mainly BMI.
