Resumo: Objective: Provide a comprehensive analysis of the current scientific research regarding the use of botulinum toxin in salivary glands as a treatment for drooling. Method: the search was performed by using LILACS and PUBMED databases with the descriptors "drooling [AND] botulinum toxin", "babação [AND] toxina botulínica" on April 2023. Full articles in Portuguese and English, published in the last 10 years, were included. From the 80 articles located, a total of 13 articles were identified as fulfilling the inclusion criteria. Results: The selected studies revealed: 1) side effects such as dry mouth, dysphagia, dental caries, and increased salivary viscosity. 2) atrophy of salivary glands after multiple applications of botulinum toxin. 3) The salivary composition remained unchanged, but there was an elevated presence of Lactobacillus in the oral cavity. 4) Enhanced capacity of saliva to restore pH balance. Conclusion: Although the use of botulinum toxin in salivary glands has demonstrated benefits in terms of improving quality of life, and social interactions of patients with drooling, further investigations are required to assess its potential long-term impacts.
