Título: EVALUATION OF MICRONUCLEI, CYTOMORPHOMETRIC AND CYTOLOGIC CHANGES OF THE ORAL MUCOSA IN CIGARETTE SMOKERS AND HOOKAH USE

Resumo: Objective: The aim was to evaluate the effect of cigarette smoking and hookah in analysis of cell morphological, cell maturation, morphometric and genotoxic changes in the oral epithelium. Study Design: This study was performed on 33 hookah users, 22 cigarette smokers and 30 non-smokers. Cytology samples were collected from the tongue lateral border and the smear was stained by the Feulgen method to investigate micronuclei (MN) and metanuclear anomalies, and by the Papanicolaou method to assess epithelial maturation, morphological and cytomorphometric variations in nuclear (NA) and cytoplasmic (CA) areas. Kruskal-Wallis test, Dunn´s test and Spearman´s correlation coefficient were used for statistical treatment (p ≤ 0,05). Results: The hookah and cigarette groups showed a high frequency of karyolysis and binucleation, but did not show greater MN expression. The hookah and cigarette groups showed micropathological and cell maturation alterations with a higher presence of superficial cells without nucleus, perinuclear halo, vacuolization, color change, mucus and keratohyalin granules. In addition, cytomorphometry showed a significant increase in NA and NA/CA in the hookah and cigarette groups. Conclusion: Hookah and cigarette had similar effects on the epithelial cells, as both promoted significant metanuclear, cytomorphometric and morphological changes, as well as in cell maturation.(FAPESP #2018/23248-1).
