Título: PHOTOBIOMODULATION THERAPY IN PATIENT WITH SJOGREN´S SYNDROME: A SERIE OF CASES

Resumo: Three women with Sjögren´s syndrome underwent photobiomodulation therapy to xerostomia treatment. The photobiomodulation sessions were done once a week for 15 weeks, irradiating 18 points on the parotid, 12 on the submandibular, and 8 on the sublingual glands with a dose of 2 J/cm2 per point. Salivary flow rate and a xerostomia questionnaire were measured during 6 months. After 15 sessions, all patients showed an increase in salivary flow rate, but the effect did not persist after 6 months. Two patients reported an increase in saliva sensation, but one experienced a decrease after the treatment ended. Xerostomia remained unchanged in two patients but improved in one after treatment ended. The study suggests that photobiomodulation therapy may increase salivary flow rate during treatment but does not alleviate xerostomia. Further controlled clinical trials with larger patient populations are necessary to confirm the potential benefits of this therapy.
