Título: VERRUCOUS CARCINOMA ARISING FROM VERRUCOUS LEUKOPLASIA AFTER NINE YEARS OF FOLLOW-UP: A CASE REPORT

Resumo: Oral Proliferative leukoplakia (OPL) is a rare and aggressive form of oral leukoplakia that is difficult to diagnose and manage due to its high malignant transformation rate. A 42-year-old female patient, a former smoker, attended to an oral diagnosis service with the presence of a whitish plaque in the mouth with an evolution time of two years. In the intraoral examination, we observed that the whitish plaque presented an irregular and rough surface, measuring approximately 2,5 cm in diameter, with extension to the lower vestibule , alveolar ridge, and left buccal mucosa. The initial histopathological diagnosis was hyperkeratosis. Due to the clinical and histopathological features observed over the 7-year follow-up that the patient has been through, a diagnosis of OPL was confirmed. Two years after, during a follow-up biopsy, a diagnosis of verrucous carcinoma was issued. The treatment consisted of surgical removal combined with radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
