Título: Rhinocerebral mucormycosis: report of the treatment of a challenging condition

Resumo: This case report describes a 70-year-old female patient with a with spontaneous pain in the left hemiface associated with a dark lesion in the ipsilateral palatal vault. Computed Tomography scans revealed bilateral maxillary, ethmoidal, and sphenoidal sinusitis associated with diffuse bone rarefaction. Debridement and biopsy procedures were performed for culture and antibiogram testing for fungi, bacteria, and mycobacteria. It was possible to observe the presence of a fungus Rhizopus spp. and direct microscopic examination showed cenocytic hyphae, leading to the diagnosis of rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis. The multidisciplinary treatment involved the use of antibiotics and antifungals, as well as surgical debridement procedures for the oral manifestation of the disease. However, after 18 days of hospitalization, the patient progressed to a cardiorespiratory arrest and died.
