Resumo: Mucormycosis is a rare, aggressive, and opportunistic fungal infection caused by Mucorales. Factors that affect the immune system, such as diabetes and HIV seropositive, are typically involved in the progression of the infection. The patient in question is a 51-year-old male presenting an extensive devitalized area involving mucosa and maxillary bone bilaterally. The patient had stopped receiving treatment and monitoring for his HIV infection. An incisional biopsy was performed, which led to the diagnosis of mucormycosis. The patient was referred for treatment of the underlying disease and received long-term antifungal and antibiotic medication. Additionally, a surgical treatment was administered through maxillary sequestotomy and removal of necrotic tissue in bone and soft tissues. Currently, the patient has been under follow-up for twelve months without signs of recurrence. The surgical and medical treatment had a satisfactory result, and the patient is now eligible for prosthetic rehabilitation.
