Resumo: The aim is to report the effectiveness of photobiomodulation (PBM) in prevention and recurrence of oral herpes simplex virus infection (O-HSV). Four individuals who reported O-HSV and were followed up for 24 months. Data about recurrence, size of lesions, duration and pain were collected. Participants underwent ten consecutive sessions of PBM (phase 1). The parameters used were: 780 nm, 100mW, 2J/point (average of 50 points/session), applied to the upper and lower lip mucosa. Six months later phase 2 was conducted, which consisted of 5 PBM sessions and phase 3 (6 months later) included data collection. After PBM, 50% of the patients showed no new lesions, pain ratings (scale 0-10) reduced from 7, 8 and 9 to 7 and 4. All patients observed a reduction on discomfort, pain and frequency of O-HSV. Preventive PBM may considered a therapeutic strategy to O-HSV.
