Resumo: Oral mucositis (OM) is an important complication of cancer chemotherapy, especially in children. The aim of this study is to compare the acceptance, perception of effectiveness, and discomfort in the application of an extraoral (EO) and intraoral (IO) photobiomodulation (PBM) devices. A self-conducted questionnaire was completed by fourteen parents of pediatric patients, aged between three and fifteen years, undergoing chemotherapy (CT) for oncologic treatment with the risk of developing OM. Patients were treated by two different PBM devices, in one CT cycle an EO-PBM and in another CT cycle an IO-PBM was used to prevent OM. The results show that 71.4% of respondents prefer the use of EO-PBM, while 28.6% prefer the use of IO-PBM. The advantages pointed are: EO-PBM section is faster, less discomfort, avoid of mouth opening, prevent nausea. Regarding the use of IO-PBM, 57.1% reported discomfort during application. In contrast, with the use of EO-PBM the vast majority (92.9%) did not feel discomfort. While 42.9% of patients presenting OM reported pain relief immediately after application using of IO-PBM, only 7.1% with EO. In conclusion, the patientīs and parentīs perception on the type of PBM indicates that EO-PBM is well accepted for preventing oral mucositis in pediatric patients.
