Área Temática: Odontologia hospitalar

Resumo: Objective: to address the importance of the differential diagnosis between oral manifestations of Kawasaki Syndrome (KS) and Pediatric Multisystemic Inflammatory Syndrome - PMI-S), associated with COVID-19, in pediatric patients.
Study design: a literature review was performed, searching the terms "differential diagnosis", "oral manifestations", "KS", "PMI-S" and "COVID-19" in Pubmed and Scholar Google databases, in the period between 2020-2023, according to inclusion criteria (pediatric patients, systematic reviews and cross-sectional studies) and exclusion criteria (case reports).
Results: 20 potentially relevant articles were selected for the analysis between 352 papers found in the literature, after removing duplicates and following the inclusion and exclusion criteria. KS and PMI-S were found to have clinical and laboratory similarities and some suspected cases of KS were subsequently confirmed as SIM-P. Oral manifestations of both diseases included erythematous mucosa, ulcers, dry, swollen, and cracked lips, and strawberry tongue.
Conclusion: there are clinical and laboratory similarities between KS and PMI-S and both can be triggered by COVID-19. Since they manifest oral and oropharyngeal alterations, the dental surgeon has an important role in these diseases´ differential and early diagnosis. Thus, the health professional should be alert to the differences between these conditions, which determine different conduct.
