Resumo: Objective:To select and analyze data on acceptance, retention and side effects in HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) users. Study Design: Information was collected from databases of Centro de Orientação e Aconselhamento of Secretaria Municipal de Saúde (COA-SMS). The selected information was evaluated when the participants received the medication and on follow-ups. Acceptance was analyzed based on the reasons patients sought the health service. Retention was assessed by means of the number of pills missed between one consultation and another. For the identification of side effects, patients were asked if they had presented any symptoms related to the use of the medication. Results: 312 patients were evaluated, of which 6% were female. Age ranged from 18-61 years. Regarding acceptance, 69.5% of patients attended COA-SMS due to social media. Regarding retention, the longer the interval between one medical follow- up and another, the greater the chance of discontinuing the use of the medication. Diarrhea and nausea were the most frequent side effects, which tend to cease after 30- day follow-up. Conclusion: The main form of acceptance of the use of PrEP occurred through social media. Long periods of medication use usually imply less retention. The most common side effects were diarrhea and nausea.
