Título: MALIGNANT NEOPLASMS THAT MIMIC ASYMPTOMATIC APICAL PERIODONTITIS: A CASES SERIES

Nome do Apresentador: Alini Cardoso SOARES

Categoria do Trabalho: Painel de pesquisa científica (PPC)

Área Temática: Estomatologia

Resumo: Objective: Report the clinicopathologic, sociodemographic, and radiological features of malignant neoplasms with a clinical diagnosis of chronic inflammatory periapical disease.

Study Design: The clinical and radiologic data of Brazilian cases of malignant neoplasms with a clinical diagnosis of asymptomatic apical periodontitis (AAP) were collected, restrospectivelly. Data were analyzed descriptively.

Results: The series comprised five females (50.00%) and five males (50.00%) with a mean age of 49.5±16.5 years (range: 26-75 years). In five cases (50%), the posterior region of the maxilla was involved. The internal appearance was radiolucent density (100%). All cases (100%) showed well-defined borders. Five different histopathologic diagnoses were performed, including metastasis (n=3/30%), squamous cell carcinoma (n=3/30%), mucoepidermoid carcinoma (n=2/20%), acinar cell carcinoma (n=1/10%) and cystic adenoid carcinoma (n=1/10%). Survival status was retrieved for one patients (100%), all of them alive.

Conclusion: Malignant neoplasms that mimic AAP are rare disorders. Because these lesions usually do not show clinical or radiological features of malignant alteration, every tissue removed by routine enucleation or curettage of periapical lesions should be submitted to histopathological evaluation.
