Título: ULTRASONOGRAPHY FOR ANALYSIS OF THE AIRWAY COLUMN IN PATIENTS WITH ODONTOGENIC INFECTION IN DEEP FASCIAL SPACES

Resumo: Objective: analyze the respiratory compromise in patients who had infections of odontogenic origin in deep fascial spaces by measuring the airway column with the aid of an ultrasound exam (US). Study design: 20 patients were analyzed. The position of the airway column and the midline were marked. The anteroposterior and laterolateral diameters of the airway column were measured, and in addition, a twenty-millimeter lower and upper portion of the airway column were examined. The midline of the upper airway was determined by the difference between the central raphe of the mylohyoid muscle and the midline of the airway column in the central cervical area. The volume of the airway column was obtained using a formula for determining the volume of a cone with a height of twenty millimeters. Results: The anteroposterior and anterolateral diameters were 13.13 mm and 19.12 mm, respectively. The mean volume of the airway column was 595.39mm3. All patients had dysphagia, 60% had dyslalia, 40% had dyspnea, 50% had some kind of voice alteration and 85% had neck swelling. Conclusion: the US proved to be efficient as an instrument for measuring the regions of interest.
