Resumo: INTRODUCTION: Saliva is a complex fluid produced by the salivary glands. Among the functions that saliva performs is the protection of oral tissues against physicochemical agents. Saliva can reflect the physiological and pathological state of the body. OBJECTIVE: to characterize the saliva of healthy patients through FT-IR spectroscopy. METHODOLOGY: saliva samples were collected from 20 eligible patients. For the analysis of this saliva, a Bruker ATR-FTIR spectrometer was used. For MATLAB analysis, the spectral regions were the "fingerprints" between 600-1800 cm-1. Data pre-processing consisted of smoothing the FTIR spectrum, normalizing the vector and removing the baseline and background using the second derivative of the spectrum. RESULTS: The peaks 1076 cm-¹ which corresponds to DNA and PO2, 1403 cm-¹ which corresponds to CH3 of protein methyl groups and CH3 of collagen, 1451cm-¹ and 1547 cm-1 and 1646 cm-1 which determines bands of proteins, amide II, peptide amide II and amide II of proteins and 1646 cm-¹ corresponding to amide I. CONCLUSION: The technique was effective for characterization, showing spectral bands of DNA, Proteins, Collagen, Amide I and Amide II. Biochemical findings are possible biomarkers to differentiate pathologies through biofluids.
