Resumo: Late complications from radiation therapy include fibrosis, necrosis, atrophy, and vascular damage. The fibrosis and chronic transient ischemia (CTI) can be added during oral functions, resulting in the appearance of an ulcer.
We present seven patients with a history of oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma treated with radiotherapy, doses between 6600/7000 cGy, and chemotherapy. Between 2 and 26 months after the radiation therapy we observed the appearance of an ulcer on irradiated areas, after two weeks of follow-up the lesions didn´t show remission, biopsies were performed resulting in mild epithelial dysplasia, fibrosis and isolated necrosis. Once the diagnosis of late radiation ulcer was confirmed, we prescribed corticosteroids and ITC-reducing regimens.
Radiation injury may simulate the recurrence of the original tumor, when it develops within the radiation field. The CTI could be the trigger of the ulcer. It is important to modify the habits that cause it and prevent such complications.
