Resumo: Objective: This research evaluated the immunoexpression of HSP27 in dentigerous cysts (DCs) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) in order to try to elucidate whether this protein participates in its pathogenesis, as these entities are some of the most frequent lesions of odontogenic origin in the jaws. Study design: The immunoexpression of HSP27 was evaluated in 10 DCs and 10 OKCs. The immunostaining intensity and distribution in the cystic epithelium were analyzed and classified based on the following scores: 0 (negative), 1 (weak), 2 (moderate) and 3 (intense). Exact Fisher´s test was performed with a significance level of 5% (p < 0.05). Results: There was a prevalence of moderate/intense immunoexpression for HSP27 in basal (90%) and suprabasal (80%) cell layers of DCs. Regarding OKCs, the basal layer showed absent/light staining in 70% of the cases. Intense basal cell layer staining was statistically associated with DCs when compared to OKCs (p=0.02). Nevertheless, in upper layers of the cystic epithelium, there was greater immunostaining in OKCs when compared to DCs (p<0.001). Conclusion: HSP27 immunoexpression in DCs and OKCs suggests its participation in these lesions, possibly influencing the stratification and differentiation of the cystic epithelium.
