Título: FOLLOW-UP OF A PATIENT WITH HEAD AND NECK CANCER WITH EMPHASIS ON ONCOLOGICAL TREATMENT SIDE EFFECTS

Resumo: A 69-year-old male patient, hypertensive, with diabetes and ex-smoker, presented an ulcer on the lateral border of the tongue, with raised and hardened edges, erythematous surface, with whitish areas, about one centimeter, and painless. An incisional biopsy was performed and the histopathological diagnosis was squamous cell carcinoma. Then, he was referred to an oncologist and the treatment consisted in partial glossectomy, followed by radiotherapy with a total dose of 60 grays, using the conformal technique. The patient was followed-up during de treatment and presented mucositis and hyposalivation. Low-level laser therapy was the treatment of choice both for mucositis and for improve salivation. Nine months after the end of the treatment, the patient reported tooth sensitivity and radiation-related caries were diagnosed. He was referred for the specialized department for the treatment of these lesions and still under multidisciplinary follow-up.
