Resumo: Objective: Clinical fluorescence (VelScope) has been utilized as an adjuvanttool in some clinical conditions, mainly to select a proper area for biopsy. Ourpurpose in this pilot study was to assess the usefulness of this device inpredicting epithelial dysplasia levels in potentially malignant conditions, mainlyleukoplakia and actinic cheilitis (AC).Study design: The patients enrolled in the study were selected from ourinstitution's outpatient clinic. All patients with a clinical suspicion of leukoplakiaor AC underwent VelScope examination, followed by biopsy. Histological resultswere compared with fluorescence features. Results: Eleven patients were diagnosed with leukoplakia, comprising sevenwomen and four men with a mean age of 59.6 years, and 15 with AC,comprising four women and 11 men with a mean age of 61.4 years. Epithelialdysplasia grades and the loss of fluorescence levels were concordant in 54.5%of leukoplakia cases and 60% of AC cases; high discrepancies were noted in18.1% of leukoplakia and 6.6% of AC cases. Conclusion: Fluorescence evaluation method is helpful in predicting the level ofepithelial dysplasia in cases of potentially malignant disorders, showing asignificant level of conformity between the clinical assessment and microscopicstudy of such cases.
