Categoria do Trabalho: Painel de Revisões narrativas ou sistemáticas (PRN)

Área Temática: Estomatologia

Resumo: Objective: To evaluate whether photobiomodulation improves hyposalivation and xerostomia in patients with head and neck cancer undergoing radiotherapy. Study Design: The Pubmed, Scopus and LILACS databases were searched for articles published until April 2023, using the terms "low level laser therapy," "photobiomodulation," "xerostomia," "hyposalivation" and "head and neck cancer" with the Boolean operators AND and OR. Results: A total of 62 articles were retrieved, of which four were included after applying the eligibility criteria. Of the total 125 patients, 62 underwent laser therapy. The indium-gallium-aluminum phosphide diode laser was the most commonly used (75%), and the average power was 40 and 60 mW during and after radiotherapy, respectively. Photobiomodulation was effective in 64.51% of patients in the case group during and after radiotherapy. Conclusions: Photobiomodulation therapy can help treat hyposalivation and xerostomia. However, few studies were included in the analysis, and they showed methodological divergences. Therefore, new controlled studies must be conducted to determine the effectiveness of the therapy.
