Título: ORAL GLUTAMINE SUPPLEMENTATION FOR PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF ORAL MUCOSITIS: A NARRATIVE REVIEW

Resumo: Objective: To determine the efficacy of oral glutamine for preventing and treating oral mucositis in patients undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. Study design: The PubMed, Scopus, and LILACS databases were searched for articles published through April 2023. The terms "oral mucositis," "stomatitis," and "oral glutamine" were used with the Boolean operators AND and OR. Results: A total of 388 studies were identified, of which 17 were included after applying the eligibility criteria. A total of 277 patients underwent radiotherapy, including 169 in the glutamine group. For chemotherapy, the sample comprised 857 patients, of whom 416 received glutamine. A total of 410 patients underwent chemoradiotherapy, of whom 209 received glutamine. The dose and duration of drug administration varied considerably. Most studies in patients undergoing radiotherapy (75%) and chemotherapy (66.67%) and all studies (100%) in patients undergoing chemoradiotherapy reported favorable outcomes of glutamine supplementation; it either delayed the onset of mucositis or reduced the incidence or severity. To date, no toxicity or adverse effects of glutamine supplementation have been reported. Conclusions: Glutamine may be efficacious for prevention and treatment of oral mucositis.
