Título: IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF EPITHELIAL-MESENCHYMAL TRANSITION BIOMARKERS IN ADENOID CYSTIC CARCINOMA

Resumo: Objective: To evaluate the immunoexpression of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition biomarkers (Twist1, Snail1, Vimentin, and E-cadherin) in specimens of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), and to investigate possible correlations between them.Study Design: Twenty cases of ACC were selected for quantitative and semi-quantitative immunohistochemical analysis and by cellular compartment. To assess survival, association with clinicopathological parameters, and histopathological grading systems, the cases were categorized into low and high expression.Results: The immunohistochemical analysis revealed significant differences between the immunoexpression of Vimentin when compared with the clinical variables: the presence of lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, late clinical staging, and death (p<0.05). In addition, a significant difference was found between the cytoplasmic immunoexpression of Snail1 with the non-occurrence of vascular invasion (p<0.05). There were no significant differences between clinicopathological parameters and grading systems, and no significant associations between immunohistochemical variables and specific survival and disease-free survival (p>0.05). Regarding the correlation test, there was an inversely proportional correlation between the cytoplasmic expression of Twist1 and Vimentin (p<0.05).Conclusion: In this study, it was possible to conclude that epithelial-mesenchymal transition biomarkers are significantly expressed in ACC specimens, possibly associated with their development process, thus highlighting the role of vimentin.Financial support: CNPq and CAPES.
