Resumo: OBJECTIVE: oral varices (OV) are mentioned in relation to arterial hypertension, but the evidence is inconsistent. The aim of this study is to assess the association of oral varices (OV) with blood pressure values.
STUDY DESIGN: a prospective case-control study was carried out between 2018 and 2021. The oral cavity was examined by calibrated professionals double-blind (kappa>0.60) in a standard dental chair and blood pressure was measured on two occasions at least. Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used to assess variables.
RESULTS: the final sample was n=1091. In the OV group, both systolic (140.1 mm Hg) and diastolic (86.5 mm Hg) blood pressure were higher than in control (127.8 and 79.5 mm Hg), with a statistically significant difference (<0,0001). Moreover, in the logistic regression, the significance was maintained.
CONCLUSIONS: OV finding in the clinical exam could be used as a risk factor for arterial hypertension, emphasizing the relevance of its identification in primary health population screening.
