Título: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ): the importance of the follow-up

Resumo: Drug-associated osteonecrosis of the jaws is associated with antiresorptive drugs. The aim is to report the case of a 41-year-old Caucasian female patient, diagnosed with breast cancer presenting metastasis in the spine. The patient was admitted to the Dental Clinic referred by the Oncology team. The lower right first molar showed a large coronal painful carious lesion. The treatment consisted of the extraction of the tooth that was performed before the use of anti-resorptive medication. After 7 months of the surgical treatment, the patient presented with a bone exposure suggestive of osteonecrosis. The PENTO protocol (pentoxifylline and tocopherol) was administered for 30 days. As the clinical painful condition persisted, drainage, local irrigation, curettage, removal of bone sequestration, and antibiotic therapy were performed. The importance of correct management and dental follow-up of cancer patients undergoing treatment with anti-resorptive medication, considering their increased risk for osteonecrosis, will be emphasized.
