Área Temática: Odontologia para pacientes especiais

Resumo: This study aimed to describe oral and maxillofacial features of dizygotic twins, in which one had microcephaly. According to twins pregnancy history, there was no occurrence of infectious or viral diseases during 37 weeks gestational period. They were referred to our service to evaluate their oral hygiene. Due to neurologic impairments, the 17-year-old twin, female, with severe microcephaly without syndrome used since childhood antiepileptic drugs that cause developmental defects of enamel and gingival overgrowth. Dizygotic twins, male and female, presented the same vertical craniofacial growth pattern. They also showed the same dental malocclusion in permanent dentition: Angle class II with maxillary atresia, severe upper and lower anterior dental crowding.Their mother also has the same facial pattern and dental malocclusion. As skull growth is linked to facial growth, can patients with microcephaly have structural and functional impairments? Future studies may explain this to contribute to preventive and interceptive health procedures.
