Título: NETWORK ANALYSIS OF ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION SYMPTOMS IN ORAL LICHEN PLANUS COMPARED TO SALIVARY BIOMARKERS: NEW APPROACH

Resumo: Objective: To estimate the network structure of 21 symptoms of anxiety and depression in individuals diagnosed with oral lichen planus (OLP) and compare it with salivary biomarkers. Study Design: A case-control study was performed, with 21 cases with OLP, and 21 controls. Beck Anxiety and Depression Inventories were administered. Levels of salivary cortisol and alfa-amylase were determined. The Fisher and Pearson´s χ2 test were used to compare the distribution of participants´ answers to the items in the instruments. Regarding network analysis, data were statistically analysed using regularized partial correlation network models. Results: The shaky/unsteady symptom was the most central within the network of anxiety symptoms of individuals with the disease and, in relation to depression symptoms, feelings of punishment and self-criticism. When exploring the relationship with cortisol and alpha-amylase, weak relationships were found. When comparing the network structures of cases and controls, the networks of anxiety symptoms did not differ between groups (p = 0.18). For depression, the global strength showed that the network of the control group was more connected (69.29 vs. 27.35, p < 0.000). Conclusion: The network approach brings a new methodological way to explore symptom configurations. Financial support for this research was provided by the FAPESB.
