Nome do Apresentador: Federico GAROLA

Categoria do Trabalho: Painel de pesquisa científica (PPC)

Área Temática: Cirurgia e traumatologia bucomaxilofacial

Resumo: Objective: Cervicofacial infections (CFI) are bacterial infections that originate in the upper aerodigestive tract and involve common spaces of the head and neck. The objective of this work is to describe the epidemiological and clinical variables, treatment and evolution of patients diagnosed with CFI. Secondarily, analyze the recorded variables in relation to the results obtained.

Materials and Methods: The inclusion criteria were all patients older than 14 years with diagnostic criteria for CFI, who were treated at the hospital in the period 2016-2023, and whose treatment required hospitalization and intervention under general anaesthesia.

Results: 201 patients were included. 84% of the CFI were odontogenic. The mean hospital length of stay (hospitalization) was 4.5 days. Diabetics, smokers and drinkers had a higher average hospitalization and postoperative complications. The most common symptoms were pain, trismus and toothache. Fever increased hospitalization by 1.6 days and nausea by 9 days. The most affected areas were submandibular and pterygomandibular. Buccal, temporal, and parotid spaces were associated with longer hospitalization. 1 patient died from septic shock.

Conclusion: The treatment of CFI is surgical. The presence of comorbidities, fever, nausea, and compromise of the buccal, temporal and parotid space increases the hospitalization stay.
