Resumo: Objectives: To investigate the historical process of foundation of oral medicine (stomatology) and oral pathology international societies/associations around the globe, their geographical distribution and what is their contribution to the prevention, diagnosis, and management of oral diseases. Study design: This review was conducted in accordance with the JBI Scoping Review Methodology Group guidance and the reporting follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Results: Search strategy was applied to 5 databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (LILACS)) and grey literature (Google Scholar, Open Grey and ProQuest). Additional sources, such as organizations websites, were also retrieved for assessment. Conclusions: The birth and growth of oral medicine and oral pathology are still unclear due to the paucity of well-documented historical evidence. Despite pioneer associations were founded in the first half of the 20th century, most of them were only created in the 2000s. These societies are currently heterogeneously distributed in America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania.
