Resumo: Actinic cheilitis (AC) is an oral potentially malignant disorder (OPMD), affecting the lower lip of fair-skinned people, more frequent in males, between the sixth and seventh decades of life. The lip is the most frequent location for oral cancer and is usually preceded by AC. This study retrospectively evaluated AC cases diagnosed in a reference hospital and observed the rate of malignant transformation. A total of 224 medical records of patients diagnosed with AC in the lower lip between the years of 2008 and 2018 were analyzed. From those 152 were male, with a mean age of 65 years and 87.6% reported occupational risk. We observed 11.5% of cases that presented malignant transformation, a rate compatible with the literature and that must serve as a warning. Prevention measures were able to delay the progression of the lesion, reinforcing the need for public policies to prevent injuries caused by UV radiation.
