Resumo: Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the fractal dimension (FD) and lacunarity of the mandibular bone in patients who received radiation therapy for head and neck cancer, comparing who developed osteoradionecrosis (ORN) to who did not develop. Study design: Two groups of patients were selected: ORN+ (case group) and ORN- (control group). Exclusion criteria were radiation dose < 60 Gy, age < 40 and > 70 years, reirradiation, use of bisphosphonates or other bone-modifying drugs, and poor image quality of panoramic radiograph. Fractal analysis was performed in the radiographs acquired after the end of radiotherapy, using ImageJ software. Intralesional, perilesional and contralateral side of the ORN region were evaluated. Results: No significant difference was found in the mean values of FD and lacunarity between ORN+ and ORN- patients (p >0.05, paired T-test). Conclusion: The fractal dimension and lacunarity of the mandible did not differ between patients with and without osteoradionecrosis.Support: CNPq, PROEX-UFMG (PBEXT)
