Resumo: Objective: To assess how widespread lingual nerve block (LNB) is in the diagnosis of burning mouth syndrome (BMS).
Study Design: This review followed the PRISMA guidelines. Therefore, a protocol was generated in PROSPERO (CRD42023394496) initially. Electronic searches were performed in the following databases: PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, LILACS, and Cochrane, in addition to the grey literature and citations from Grémeau-Richard et al. (2010). Posteriorly, two reviewers screened the studies.
Results: Searches identified 469 articles in the main databases and 412 additional records (grey literature and citations). After removing 302 duplicate references, 579 remained, 353 from the main databases and an additional 226. However, no studies met the eligibility criteria, resulting in an empty systematic review.
Conclusion: More than a decade after suggesting the use of LNB in the diagnosis of BMS, no study using it was found. Therefore, it is assumed that the technique is not widespread. More accurate diagnostic techniques are needed to allow targeted treatment approaches for BMS patients.
