Resumo: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common cancer of the oral cavity andpredominantly affects men over 45 years old. The etiology of SCC is multifactorialincluding smoking, consumption of alcohol, human papillomavirus (HPV), malnutrition andgenetic factors. The clinical aspect can vary from reddish, whitish, nodular or ulceratedlesions. A 20-year-old female patient with no history of smoking or alcoholism, presentednodular and ulcerated lesion on the right lateral border of the tongue treated for more than 30days with topical corticosteroid therapy. After incisional biopsy, the microscopic analysisrevealed malignant epithelial neoplasm composed of sheets of neoplastic cells exhibitingintense pleomorphism, nuclear hyperchromatism, aberrant mitosis and prominent nucleoli. The final diagnosis of moderately differentiated SCC was obtained. The patient was referredto the oncology center in stage II disease and underwent partial resection of the tongue. After10 months of follow-up, the patient had no recurrences.
