Resumo: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common cancer of the oral cavity and
predominantly affects men over 45 years old. The etiology of SCC is multifactorial
including smoking, consumption of alcohol, human papillomavirus (HPV), malnutrition and
genetic factors. The clinical aspect can vary from reddish, whitish, nodular or ulcerated
lesions. A 20-year-old female patient with no history of smoking or alcoholism, presented
nodular and ulcerated lesion on the right lateral border of the tongue treated for more than 30
days with topical corticosteroid therapy. After incisional biopsy, the microscopic analysis
revealed malignant epithelial neoplasm composed of sheets of neoplastic cells exhibiting
intense pleomorphism, nuclear hyperchromatism, aberrant mitosis and prominent nucleoli.
The final diagnosis of moderately differentiated SCC was obtained. The patient was referred
to the oncology center in stage II disease and underwent partial resection of the tongue. After
10 months of follow-up, the patient had no recurrences.
